Every online poker maniac knows – Full Tilt is a crazy place when it comes to high stakes. So there's no surprise that the Onyx Cup, which is a new live tournament series they have just launched, will feature huge buy-ins and even bigger payouts. Oh, yeah and another thing is that Full Tilt Poker have just announced the launch of a brand new live poker tournament series called the ONYX Cup!!!

Ever since Wicked Chops Poker spread the rumor about Tilt planning land-based events on Friday, the poker world was buzzing with the news all through the weekend. And so finally on Monday Full Tilt Poker have made an official video announcement (included at the end of the story) hosted by Ali Nejad. Full Tilt pros Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen, Erik Seidel, and Tom durrrr Dwan were also there to talk about the new series.

“It's not just about the money in this event,” Ivey said. “It's more about playing with the caliber of players that we're going to be up against. You know, playing against the best players, and a lot of these guys here at the table are my friends and we're friendly but we're also super competitive against each other. There's going to be a lot of pride that comes along with winning this event.”

Erik Seidel was asked whether the event was a surprise to them or was it only just a matter of time with the way buy-ins have been increasing, to which he replied: “I do think it's a natural progression because there's so much money around and people are playing for such high stakes that it was inevitable. I think Full Tilt Poker was the only online organization that could pull this off because they have all the best players in the world.”

Full Tilt have already planned 6 events which will take place on 3 continents (North America, Europe, Asia) and will feature $100,000 to $300,000 buy-ins and a $30 million prize pool throughout the entire series. The events are to be broadcast in 40 countries across the globe in 20 different languages. The series will end with the sixth and final $250,000 event with $1 million added to the prize pool.

The Onyx Cup will also have its own player leaderboard which at the end of the series will determine the best overall performance and reward the winner with the Onyx Cup, a brand new sports car and the title of “the player that conquered poker's elite.”

As of today, March 15, 2011 the qualification events for the first Onyx Cup event are already running on Full Tilt Poker. The tournament series will launch with the first live event taking place May 11 in Las Vegas. Among those to take part in this tournament will be Team Full Tilt members, Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, Chris Ferguson, Erick Lindgren, John Juanda, and many more.
