Neverheeb's rant against the FCC in goodeats's thread got me thinking about the perverse censorship in American media today.
As one of the most free-thinking, freedom-respecting nations in the world it has always amazed me how backwards our media censorship standards are. From archaic movie ratings and book banning in schools to kicking Howard Stern from mainstream airwaves, it is clear that the powers that be in our government have a defined set of morals standards they wish to apply to everyone in the country. Religion is obviously to blame, but that is a different topic entirely.
Where does NWP fit into all of this?
I believe NWP has proven that truly unfiltered content can work in today's politically correct society. NWP has taken this idea to the extreme by not only giving users complete freedom to post almost anything they want but allowing them to do it in complete anonymity. This is a key point, as obviously people will do and say outrageous things in anonymity that they will not even consider doing in public. Naysers, politicians, and uptight 2+2ers would be shocked by such an experiment - surely it would lead to unbridled, perverse content and absoute anarchy, would it not? Well sure, that happens. Cmoney sometimes goes on spam-tilt, threads often get filled with useless bullshit, and terrible posters are sometimes allowed to run rampant. You know what though? Most of the time people keep things in line. NWP has a defined social structure that ensures that the forum will correct itself with little moderation. I think the users here respect the idea of completely free speech enough to filter through all the junk. High content threads are always the most entertaining to read on this site, and oftentimes these threads would be nonexistent with the threat of censorship or immediate bannings.
Say what you want about Micon, but his dream of building an almost completely uncensored community is an honorable one. Hopefully mainstream media will eventually be allowed to offer completely unfiltered content. The vast majority of people - excluding religious nuts - will view this as a positive thing and not abuse it.
