You ever have 100 dollars online and play a 20 dollar tournament? Sure maybe you cash and maybe you don't but in the end your fate is decided before you even play that tournament. The hardest lesson to learn about poker is bankroll discipline. Just because you fold a lot doesn't make you a disciplined player. You may be playing good but for a lot of players it's a leak they hide behind that reflects their general approach to life. It's easy to fold every hand and turn off your brain but if you're going through the motions you can be assured that the better players are going to abuse you. It doesn't mean that you won't win it just means you'll probably win less. The game will feel hard because you're trying to be perfect in situations that are marginal. If you are naturally inclined toward folding in situations that you may have the best hand try to think through that more and reach outside yourself for the answer.

Bankroll discipline goes hand in hand with poker discipline for the successful player. It takes extreme patience to continue to play 5 dollar tournaments if you say started with 100 and now have 50 and you want that 50 back. For sure being in that hole will make the game seem completely pointless and frustrating cause your brain knows how long it might take you to win that money back and make a profit. If you do stick with it though in the end you'll feel a tremendous amount of pride at each state of your acomplishment and when you finally get out of that hole you'll be super confident knowing that it wasn't luck that got you there but persistance.

I'm of the opinion that you should always play in relation to the amount of money you have online. Even if you have a job where you can make deposits often because you make decent money it's too often an excuse to play the more exciting game that you want to play. It can easily lead to a situation where you are stuck in a hole that you can't deposit enough to get out of without following an original strategy of small incremental wins. The biggest advantage of small incremental bankball increases/decreases is that your emotions will generally be more balanced and if you stick with a plan you will see the differences in strategy at each level more acutely if you pass through them one at a time and your brain will help you out by tuning in your instinct to the details of that. Nothing says you can't make deposits even if you have money online. Doing this will feel a lot like investing in stocks or putting away money in a savings account and it will reinforce the fact that you're trying to build something.

These comments all assume you are a winning player or care about losing and want to be a winning player. Even if you know nothing about poker if you're paying attention and take your time you can probably figure out enough to not lose too much when you first start out. If you want to be assured of a bankroll the number one thing to remember is that every decision you make to invest your money matters to your win rate and especially important to your variance. Playing the 3 dollar rebuy tournament with 100 dollar bankroll might seem harmless even if you recover that money. In the end though when you add up all those tournaments that you didn't cash in you'll realize you would have had a larger bankroll if you didn't take those high variance shots. The reason is because the higher the bankroll the higher you can profit.(probably) So taking 12 dollars out of your 100 and not cashing in that rebuy means you have to now earn an ROI on 88 dollars if you don't cash. That missing twelve dollars means that you might not be able to move up for x number of hours. That variance shows up in your roll. Even playing a 2 dollar tournament with 2000 players every day could be costing you money. Everything you play matters and should be thought out. The fact is you're going to have to suffer through some extremely boring games to get to the games where you feel excited about playing. That's the whole point. It's not supposed to be fun ironically. If you're serious you're not there to gamble and the low levels won't be much fun. Just remember this the next time you see that guy who used to play 1/2 limit or whatever on five tables constantly now playing 50/100 and you're still playing that 1/2 game.

Ok let's say you've played 250 6.25 heads up turbo sngs and you're only up 38 dollars.  Throughout this whole time you've had major downswings all the way to behind 14 games(minus the rake).  I feel like I haven't run well yet with my percentage of good flops extremely low and every possible bad thing that could happen in a game happening to me.  This sng challenge is part of my self imposed discipline challenge to stick with one type of game to build no matter what.  I guess my question is how long can a break even/losing streak go in these things?
