Don't know if there are any trotting fans here but anyways the third biggest annual race after Hambletonian and Prix D'Amerique is held in Stockholm Sweden next sunday.
As usual the writer is at the stand.
Would think betting is open for you in the US too and depending on the positioning at the gate my money goes in on Buck I St Pat this year. Being a Swede would have liked to see somebody being able to challenge but can only see Enough Talk being the real contender. Two heats leading up to the final later on in the afternoon. Positions to be decided tomorrow.
The whole event is similar to the WSOP for poker players and will not miss it for anything in the world.
1994 Copiad vs Pine Chip trotting race of the century! Any comments?
Capt Black Jack The Maersk Alabama crew’s recent ordeal off the Somali coast is destined to become the stuff of folklore.
And now one modern-day Robin Hood, moved by the actions of Captain Richard Phillips and his merry men, wants to give them another few days they are unlikely to ever forget.
An anonymous philanthropist who wins big at the casinos of Las Vegas and gives a portion of his winnings to the needy is ready to jet the US crew and their significant others to Sin City on an all-expenses-paid weekend, Fox News reported.
Just like the 1993 production 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights', the Maersk Alabama's crew's ordeal was no laughing matter. Obviously impressed by how the 1,098-teu ship’s crew reacted when the chips were down and how Phillips wagered his life and won, the man known only as Robin Hood 702 has taken his hat off to the American “heroes”.
“Standing up to adversity, in the face of certain death, standing up to these pirates...I was blown away,” the blackjack specialist told Fox.
“Maybe they don’t need financial help, but I want to recognise them as heroes.”
In order to save his fellow crew members, Phillips surrendered himself to four pirates shortly after his US-flagged ship was hijacked in the Indian Ocean on 8 April. The 19 other crewmen then sailed the ship to Mombasa, Kenya where it arrived last Saturday.
“It really touched my heart that someone would sacrifice their own life ... a father and a husband...for pirates to take him and spare his crew. It touched my heart and I started to cry.”
Perhaps the Las Vegas high-roller is not seeing the wood for the trees, however.
It may have escaped his attention that the legend of Robin Hood involves a bandit who used considerable force to deprive people of their property. In addition, although Somali piracy would appear nothing but an extortion racket, many of those involved have continually tried to portray themselves as protectors of their countrymen’s interests.
Nevertheless, Robin Hood 702’s cards are on the table with an open invite for the crew and their entourage to jet down to Nevada and live it up for the weekend free of charge.
The crew’s envisaged accommodation quarters are not yet known but they are unlikely to be put up in Paradise Island: the plush resort features a pirate-ship battle played out in Buccaneer Bay.
