I saw this movie last night at the Orleans and I must disagree somewhat with your opinions so far. Although I agree that the story was a bit anticlimatic because of Dillinger's story being so well known, I like the fact that they focused on the mental cat and mouse game that Dillinger and his crew were playing with Hoover's guys. The thing that made it a good movie for me was the FANTASTIC acting of Depp, Bale, and even Giovani Robisi (sp ?). Initially it seems like Bale undersells his role and isn't committed to his character, but when you find out that the guy he played quit the FBI after the Dillinger case and hels'd himself in real life, you can appreciate Bale's pure talent here. And Depp is the shit !! For once, an actor plays a gangster without actually looking like he's trying to copy another gangster from another film. I think it's one of his best roles, period. I couldn't get enough of his character and his story despite obv knowing how it was going to end. Good flick. Would watch again.
I agree the acting was grade A but the story was a C-, it fucking sucked. They should have replaced the love story with more bank robbing. I mean I read that he went into a bank and acted like he was filming a movie and asked if he could film a 'fake' bank robbery for his movie and then just took the fucking money, how is that not in there?
