I got the Samsung Instinct last year because it did spoken turn by turn directions and the iPhone didn't. I'm in strange cities all the time for work, so that's a key feature for me.
Check out the navigation app Google just unveiled for Android 2.0 phones-
The first Android 2.0 phone is the Motorola Droid for Verizon this week. Good for them. I didn't know Motorola was still in business. Hopefully Sprint will announce an Android 2.0 phone for early next year.
Anyone use an Android 1.6 phone? Is it good? AFAIK, you can't upgrade to 2.0 on your own, the provider has to push it to you.

LOL.... J/K. But seriously does your GPS fuck up a lot on your Instinct? Mine has given me bad directions multiple times.
Yeah, the navigation app is not good, but it's better than nothing if you're in an unknown city. There was an update for it a couple weeks ago which will hopefully make it better.

I bought the tomtom xl340-s a couple weeks ago. It worked great and also has the turn by turn speak navigation. The thing was dead on all the time, then I hooked it up to my computer a couple days ago and it wanted to update the maps. Big mistake! In the update something went wrong and the next time I tried to use the device the screen said no maps. I talked to their support a couple times today. They were very friendly and knew what they were talking about, but my issue is still not resolved. I've tried to format the device several times and then redownload the content, but time after time the internal memory fails. There is a flaw in the device itself for sure. I'm going to call tomorrow about getting a new one sent to my house.
I was eating once with faduniak and asked him to show me his gps application on his iphone. When he brought the application screen up it was showing us located in the next city over. I'm sure that's been fixed by now.

This is a game changer. Google is going after the nav market and it is going to shake things up big time. This is sick and will be on all phones, it's only a matter of time. Everywhere you see google maps you will see this, if they don't just join them.

No. Google is using this as a competitive advantage for Android 2.0.

I wish my expensive Garmin had pics like those of the terrain/buildings. Amazing. How long do you think before Garmin does that? I mean I hate handheld GPS. Mine is permanently wired in my SUV with power supply connected to the battery, not cig lighter and external aux antennae connected to it as well.

Google's current business strategy is to leverage the massive amount of data that they've collected over the past 10 years and continue to collect every day. This product is an excellent example of them doing that brilliantly. Garmin could implement some of those features, like "where can I get a burger along the way", but they'll never have the up to date information that Google does. As for the terrain/street view images, I don't know how Garmin would be able to get that. Has any company besides Google collected that kind of data? If they have, it will cost Garmin a whole lot of money to get it.
IMO the most impressive thing in the video is "Take me to the museum that has the King Tut exhibit". There is no way that any Garmin product in the foreseeable future is going to be able to do that.

The HTC Hero is a good phone available for Sprint. It runs Android 1.5, and HTC has announced they're skipping 1.6 and will upgrade to 2.0 sometime soon. The Motorola Droid looks like a good phone, but it's only for Verizon. I have a feeling that they really rushed it to market and it will be buggy as hell. The Android 2.0 spec was officially released less than 2 weeks ago, so they were developing the phone as the spec was being developed, which is generally a bad idea.
I asked on Reddit.com today what the first Android 2.0 phone for Sprint would be and someone pointed me to the Samsung Moment. I'm a bit of a Samsung fanboy. I think 5 of my 6 phones have been Samsungs, and my TV and my computer monitor are both Samsungs. They're not flashy or high end, but they're good, they're cheap, and I've never had a serious problem with any of them.
That keyboard looks nice and big, which is what kept me from getting a Palm Pre (also their app store is a ghost town).
The Moment is the new version of the Instinct, which I've liked for the past year and a half. They changed the branding name at the last minute for some reason. The only thing I don't like about the Moment is that it uses the last generation ARM11 processor. The Droid and the iPhone 3GS use the new ARM Cortex family. They make up for it by running the Moment at 800Mhz instead of 600Mhz like the other two. We'll see what that does to battery life.
Around Christmas I'll see what the situation is with the Hero and Moment upgrading to Android 2.0 and the Droid coming to Sprint. My next phone will almost certainly be one of those three.

Hmm I am limited by what Verizon has to offer. Honestly I cannot stand the other carriers. My buddy said i should go with Droid Passion I will look it up. Supposed to be the shizznit.

Seriously how people even discuss which phones are good or bad anymore is beyond me. The iPhone is by far and away the best phone you can get. There is no argument. These "droid" commercials are retarded too. I can understand if you can't switch from ATT or find their coverage horrible in your area, but there is really no competition compared to the iPhone.

No, thanks. I'd rather not have my phone completely controlled by Mr. Jobs.
Also, AT&T sucks a fat dick on many levels.
