I would say the vast majority of the American people are wildly uneducated and stupid so its not a surprise that Limbaugh's show draws in such numbers. Furthermore, people are entertained more by the outrageous than they are by sensible ideas.

Not anymore.

I listened a lot in the early and mid '90s, and even watched his short-lived TV show (which I admit was kind of a lame, watered down version of his radio show).

Now I don't listen because I really just don't listen to the radio anymore unless I'm in my car, and I'm rarely in my car in the late morning.

I highly doubt that a christian TV Evangelist audience is the same audience that listens to Rush...at least not nearly as much as you obviously think. Have any statistics to back that up?



I think the problem with liberal radio is that it is just not enjoyable to listen to and it constantly fails to deliver on hard hitting subjects that people want to hear about. I have many liberal friends who cannot stand to listen to it for very long. Here in Wisconsin, (supposedly a liberal state) liberal radio is a rarity. Conservative shows dominate the marketplace and get excellent ratings. Liberal radio frequently attempt to expand but in a nutshell, nobody cares for them. (and no, its not because they have jobs where they can't listen to it)

I don't really understand the reason for the success of conservative talk radio and the failure of liberal talk radio, but I don't think it is due to the supply side.

I think you could hire the most brilliant radio producers in the world and they still would not be able to make a very popular liberal talk radio show.

The reason has something to do with what motivates conservatives to tune into conservative radio. There is some motivation there that is lacking in liberals.

I think part of it is the desire to join a community of like-minded people.

Liberals generally don't seem to suffer from a feeling of intellectual isolation unless they happen to live in very conservative environments. (E.g. the only liberal in a small Texas town or something.)

Liberals harbor no resentment to the print media in general, to the networks (except FOX obv), or to the popular culture at large. Liberals have plenty of sympathetic outlets.

Conservatives often have this kind of embattled, sometimes romanticized, me-against-the-world, I'm-the-last-sane-man-in-an-insane-world, etc. mentality. (Epitomized on NWP by v12cl imo.) I think a lot of this is a perfectly valid reaction to the liberal orientation of the media-entertainment culture.

Consequently they tend to thrive in the kind of subterranean community that conservative talk radio creates.

Also liberals read more. THis is a statistic I can find. Unfairly the intelligent conservatives on this site are averaged in with legions of uneducated christian bible beaters while liberals only have to be averaged in with blacks who are only 12% of our population and arent really liberal as they hate gay people etc. and the only real liberal issue they seem to care about as a group are government hand outs.

i made this exact point here like two weeks ago. it also should be noted that while the media/society/whoever tends to attack the republican party by saying it throws out crumbs to the religious right to keep ignorant rednecks voting red, no onesays shit about liberals taking black votes just because they all agree on handouts.

How do people like this function in any aspect of life? The "Lizard people" one I understand, that person is a clown or retarded. This person honestly tried, and just couldn't follow the most simple of directions, and couldn't be bothered to ask someone for help.

The difference is that the religous right have considerable power and sway in Republican in policy making whereas the people who subscribe to a hand out mentality have very little sway over policy making and/or the party's ideals

also the religious are far more dangerous than the minimum wage worker who wants some help from the government. the comparison is apples and oranges.

It is a shame the liberal mind doesn't need constant reinforcement of its views like conservative ones do.

NPR is usually considered "liberal" and is far more hard-hitting than anything like Rush or for profit media. It just isn't done in a clowning format. Liberals DO want hard hitting issues, at least hte ones who listen to radio. They just don't care to be pandered to with mindless hypcritical ranting.

I seem to recall listening to Rush a bit recently.. He had some fact that he claimed debunked global warming. Any intelligent person with a technical BS and a decent analytical mind could easily tell how full of shit the guy is. Yet this is probably "hard hitting" to many of his viewers. Reality is quite different.

After a Supreme Court decision, it appears that Franken will win by less than 50 votes, for a margin of 0.00000015%.
