To all NWPers in New Orleans

From CNN.com:

"In worst-case scenarios, most of New Orleans would end up under 15 feet of water, without electricity, clean water and sewage for months. Even pumping the water out could take as long as four months to get started because the massive pumps that would do the job would be underwater."

MONTHS. That's half a million people's homes they're talking about.

What dumb fucker put the pumps somehere so when you really needed them, they would be under water? Maybe storing them in Shreveport would have been smarter.

How many people do you think are going to find out next week that homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding?

Once again I am shown to be right in the face of all other conventional wisdom.

The storm has been downgraded to a Category 4 and is expected to hit largely unoccupied parts of coastal Mississippi, rather than New Orleans.

New Orleans will undoubtedly get some of it, but nothing like what was predicted.

I wish there was a way I could have placed a bet on this.

I also should have bet on the Michael Jackson trial, because I knew way before the verdict was announced that he'd be found not guilty on all counts (even though I'm sure he did it).

People, particularly on TV, make a big ass deal about what "Category" the storm is. Just because the wind gauges are reading three MPH less than they used to and now it's in Category 4, doesn't make the storm significantly less damaging. NO got lucky that they managed to barely get on the west side of the eye, which is better.

None of us have seen the real results of this storm. The levees that have protected New Orleans forever are going to trap all of that flood water in the city. Add thousands of gallons of sewage and gasoline to the standing water and it's going to be VERY bad for many days.

This has nothing to do with being a right winger.

I never said to not prepare for the worst.

However, the media (and even the NWS) was making it sound like it was all but a certainty that New Orleans would be buried under 15 feet of water until February. That was just a bit hard for me to swallow.

I am not minimizing the damage that actually occurred. I am saying that it does not begin to approach what was being claimed as likely to happen.
