MISSION STATEMENT/FORUM RULES WITHIN
To the best of my knowledge, online poker players are perhaps the single biggest marks on the planet when it comes to pragmatic information security. These are people with hundreds of thousands of dollars on poker sites who think nothing of cruising the backwaters of the internet on the same laptops and workstations they use to play poker.
Even the players who aren't downloading po...

shooting off forum = shooting off forum
Although I have been slacking on getting a lot of the promised content up, please keep questions/posts here on topic. As of now this is really the only forum on the internet where digital poker players can ask questions related to protecting their assets while learning about the overall nature of the internet's murkier corners.
Its probably going to attract a lot of attention (good...

Definitions of terms and concepts relating to internet security!
A quick compendium of common terms and concepts when discussing information security:
ActiveX Controls These controls link to any object--traditionally dynamic content such as tables and buttons that react to mouse clicks--embedded within a Web page. Although ActiveX controls help Web pages spring to life, malicious programmers can easily use them as vehicles for downloading spywar...

The day the security industry died... kinda.
Kevin Mitnick. The first high profile hacker. Went to jail after prawning the ever loving shit out of Sun, Nokia, and many, many others. Got out and now is a "Security Consultant" who makes infinite dough lecturing and doing audits.
Dan Kaminski. Among other accomplishments, he recently discovered a massive hole in DNS, the way names are translated to IP addresses on the i...

What the hell kind of attack was NWP hit with?
Mr. Admin says it was someone with "CMS access". I have admin access (create/delete forums/users) but he seems to be talking about front page content management, which I don't have.
Here's he post for reference- QUO...

On my router at home, I use a MAC address whitelist to restrict access for wireless connections. The only wireless connections are my brother in law's laptop, my XBox, and PS3, so I don't care about anyone snooping on those.
Is that a good way to keep people off of my home network?...

Obv was the inspiration for the dogshit film "Hackers"
I love the way a lot of this was political also, left wingers vs right wingers.

Completely levelled my lappy - Be careful.
Ok, so my PB was one of my haunts for downloading various things - in fact I don't believe I have paid for ANY software in the past 5 or so years.
We all know that the owners of PB were sentenced, but the site is still up and running, however the powers that be have started some tactics to try and get you off downloading torrents from the site and I was on the forefront....

So one day, someone stumbles across this while slutting around the backwaters of twitter:

Looks like total gibberish, but its not.
Each one of those entries is a base64 encoded url. And when the bot on a compromised computer views the url, it can download instructio...

This was Sonatine's PM to Micon, who then asked me to create this forum-
"...in no way shape or form would the forum condone any form of destructive action, it would be a place to discuss current threats and to examine the fabric of the internet criminal economie(s), with an accent on information security as it applies to peoples every day lives (eg: how not to get your c...

introducing The Chinese Army
I can remember exactly when I realized China was going to beat America into a living death without ever firing so much as a single bullet.
This is a post from a Chinese state-sanctioned (all websites are state monitored and thus sanctioned really) website:
"Revenge of the flame - we, as the...

Iranian opposition cyber gladiators ftw
Very interesting things are afoot in Iran right now, above and beyond stolen elections and bloody riots.
Taking a page from the Chinese concept of "peoples activism", the so called Opposition is aggressively demolishing Iran's internet infrastructure.
A webpage/portal was established yesterday which enabled people to spawn multi-threaded DOS attacks against Ahma...

Before I begin, let me state the following: This is my personal perspective of the history of Warez and the scene in general on America Online (AOL). How the scene developed in the beginnings, and where it has evolved to today. I also would like to thank Mat Stars, Reflux, and Da Chronic himself for their input and insight. Enjoy.
Well, as of writing this, I am 22 years old (it’s 2...

This is in reference to SteveDaPimp, who hacked AOL accounts and then requested poker passwords for accounts that were registered to them.

Introducing the Russian Business Network (RBN)
It is impossible to discuss the overall tapestry of cybercrime without mentioning the Russian Business Network, or RBN.
The cybercrime world belongs to RBN, all other criminal orgs just party there.
Based out of St. Petersburg, the RBN sets up shell corporations which spawn 'rogue' internet service providers who are responsible for the vast majority of malware and spa...
