Watch out when choosing a Vegas apartment.

Areas change from decent to bad (and back again) very quickly, especially as you travel east and west.

Keep in mind that if you are less than 2 miles away from the strip, the area probably sucks.

Any Vegas apartment going for $650 is probably either a dump, in a crap neighborhood, or both. There are many apartment complexes, for example, west of the strip on Twain, fairly close to the Rio. They look okay at first glance, but the area is ghetto and many of the apartments are poorly maintained.

$800 is probably the minimum you want to pay for a 1 bedroom in Vegas -- at least if it's anywhere near the stirp. You can probably get cheaper if you go way out, far off from everything.

Also, get a car alarm and make sure your insurance is paid up, because Vegas leads the nation in car thefts.

West of the strip is better for traffic purposes. The traffic east of the strip is terrible, especially in the afternoon and early evening.

I recommend Southern Highlands. My place is a nice 5500 sq feet for 4k a month.

Is this serious advice or just a "im a baller" subliminal brag post? If its serious im pretty sure nobody in this thread is looking to spend $48k a year on housing. Also, if you are going to spend that much wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a house? Then at least you would have something to show for it at the end of the year.

Indeed. Having today signed a lease on a house in London for equivalent of a mere $34k a year I feel so inadequate. Mind you someone else was enquiring with the agent and had up to $120k a year to spend, so they own JM.

As for buying- why would you buy something that's hugely falling in value?

This is a good topic. I am planning to move down there in december after I graduate. When you say $800 a month for a nice 1 br is that just the price near UNLV or anywhere in vegas? What are some good areas that you recommend? Does that 800 usually include utilities? Is public transportation there good? My car is such a peice of shit I don't even think it will be worth it to bring it down there. I'll probably just fly down there with a backpack full of clothes, and a pocket full of cash. So i'll buy a different car when i get there, but will probably be stuck taking the bus or whatever for a month or so. Is it easy to find jobs for a college educated person? I hope to go down there with enough money so I can just chill and play cards while I look for a "real" job and I don't have to work a shit job, but eventually i think i want to find a good job and be a member of society. Any other tips? Thanks in advance!

Give me a little time to respond to this.

OK, sorry it took me so long to get back to this.

First off, early congrats on graduating in December and on moving to Vegas. If you are a person that can control your vices, Vegas is a great place to live. Remember take everything in moderation. This town has ruined many people.

When I say $800 a month, no, I am not talking about places around UNLV or anywhere close to the strip. Decent apartments in that area start around $650. The areas I was talking about are a little further off of the strip in nice areas of town such as Henderson (Green Valley especially) or Summerlin. I have only lived in Henderson in my 7 years here, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Green Valley is a subdivision of Henderson, and to me it is by far the best place to live in Vegas. The traffic is never really that bad except for on a few select areas, it is extremely convenient with everything you need in life usually being within 5 miles of your place, and it is in very close proximity to the strip with very easy access. Summerlin is very nice as well, but you have to deal with the 95 (highway) and the Spaghetti Bowl, which is always a mess. Traffic in Summerlin sucks. The areas directly to the east of the strip within 7 miles are mostly very bad, so don't even bother, and everything to the west of the strip (where Martha was talking about) is not bad, but mostly pretty old and run down. The further you get away from the strip the nicer the places get, but you are far from the highway and always have to deal with the traffic of the major Las Vegas streets such as Tropicana, Flamingo, Sahara, ect..

You definitely do not want to rely on the public transportation here for very long. The buses aren't bad, but it will take you forever to get where you need to go.

As far as how easy it is to get a job for a college educated person obv this depends on what your field of expertise is. We are in dire need of anything involved with the medical field as well as education. Vegas needs teachers worse than any other city right now. I don't even think you need to have a degree in education to get a teaching job here now, just a bachelors degree. Other than that, I don't think you have much of an edge over a non college graduate with experience when it comes to getting jobs in casinos. Your talking about the hospitality industry for the most part, which is mostly non college graduates or people still in school. Of course if you have experience I would definitely think you have an edge over a non college graduate in getting a job.

Hopefully this answers most of your questions.

Some places check your credit score, but a lot of places don't. As long as you have the cash you should have no problems. Remember, this is the town for degenerates.

230-200. After a month you stop having to pay hotel tax so it goes from 230ish to 200. Thats power + cable. No internet.

Well that is furnished and your utils are free. It is also weekly, so if you decide you want to move next week it is no big deal. I'm sure you could get a shithole studio apt with a lease that isn't furnished for a lot less. I just never bothered to price them.

Michael, your best bet is to go with craigslist probably. If you have nothing for some lowlife Vegas roommate to steal, you'll probably be ok. lol.

You can get cheaper rooms at some of the less glamorous downtown hotels.

You're not going to get any cheaper than 200 a week I don't think. The weekday prices might match that, but the problem is the prices are dynamic and weekend/high demand days jack the prices up. I stayed in the plaza the first day when I moved to Vegas. (First time ever I thought I was going to be stuck in an elevator... started pulling out the phone when it finally started back up..) Anyway, next day I couldn't even get a room down @ Plaza. You'd have to find the shittiest of shitty downtown hotels to get close to $200 a week.

Yeah maybe you're right. A couple of weeks ago the Cortez was doing $20 a night Mon-Sun, but now their website's cheapest rates are $45 a night. The Vegas Club is doing $26 or so Mon-Fri, but more at weekends.

With the way the Real Estate market has tanked I'm currently looking into buying some condos in Vegas to rent out and maybe even a baller mansion like X just bought... although probably the condos first.

Ks check with me before you move, I might have something to rent you.

Say I want to buy a place close to the strip but i dont want to feel i danger for my life while walking to said strip. Is this even a reasonable request or do i just buy a car?

What kind of place am I looking at if Im wanting to spend, say 200k on a 1/2 bedroom? Should I just get a place in Summerlin or Henderson, and if so would I get more bang for my buck for moving out to the suburbs?

Where does everyone else live that's relevant to this...(obv just general area) and assuming becasue Im canadian I cant actually get a work Visa for a year so will they allow me to chill out without a job paying the mortgage with cash?

Can I do all this on 140k?

any advice would be appreciated...
