First time, long time. Great stories and advice here.
I'll be out in August and was planning on renting a car. Will be staying about a mile from the strip and was wondering what costs are associated that might make just taking cabs, monorail, public transit a better option. Here in NJ parking at casinos is pretty cheap. Normally free (with a players card), or 5 to 10 bucks. If I'm staying a week will I benefit from having my own car?
Good question. Since you are staying a mile from the strip I would say getting a car is a good idea. Cab fare went way up recently and you will probably spend daily the same amount of money just getting to the strip as you would renting a cheap compact. They just raised their rates $.45 a mile (not sure what that puts the rate at, but definitely high) plus a $.25 per mile gas charge. I usually would suggest cabbing it, but now renting a car might be the way to go all the time, especially if you are going to be running up and down the strip. All of the parking garages are free (no players card needed) except for in the downtown area, which is where Binions, Freemont Street Experience and the Golden Nugget are. Maybe you'll go to that area once so who cares. You get your parking validated at Binions anyway. While driving around town, try to stick to the highway I-15 (which runs parallel to the strip) when traveling more than a mile. Traffic lights on the strip take forever, and the traffic always sucks. Obv you are not going to drive your car to each casino you hit, so try to pick a garage that is middle ground to where you want to spend time. Also, the garages on the west side of the strip are much easier to access and to leave IMO. Best garages to use are NY NY, Bellagio, Mirage and Treasure Island. Each is easily accessed from the highway and are all in middle ground.
