I play at the Commerce from time to time, live real close. I am thinking about playing the $9-18 game there on a regular basis. What are your feelings on that game, it is very loose to say the least. What should I look to make in that game if I play it regularly? Thanks

$9/18 - can the casino think of anything else to slow the game down - who the heck wants to count white chips every bet.

Wouldnt $10/20 be a lot easier ?

While watching live at the bike two days ago the hosts were explaining why using $2 chips at the 8/16 table is much better then an $8 chip structure. If they used $8 chips, suppose there is a $320 pot, there would be 40 chips in the middle. It could be put in a neat small stack and easy to count. But how appealing does it look for the inexperienced player that is just playing for fun?. They were using $2 chips and a $320 pot would have 160 chips. Every pot just looked enormous and chips were flying all over the place. The feeling of pulling in a pot with 160 chips and having to stack it all in nice piles infront of you is much more exciting then being pushed 40 chips. So because of this the play is alot more wild because even though it may be the same $$ amount, the average know nothing player wants to pull in the huge looking pot.

with or without imput from them (who dont play that low) you can assume the game to be very good, and very loose aggressove like every 7.50-15, 8-16, and 9-18 game in excitence. a little of an oversimplification but not far off.

It might be kind of difficult to post the $4 small blind with an $8 chip. But you may have been talking about a nl game with 8/16 blinds, I just took it as an 8/16 limit game

The Commerce 9-18 should be pretty good, though I've never played it personally.

If you have a solid game, you should be a favorite to win there. Give it a shot.

You also might want to consider 15-30, which is in the much nicer "top section" room, and you also get free food.

Dan, thanks for your reply. Ok so in your opinion how much should my bankroll be to play in the $15-30 there? I have heard that game is great but hesitate in jumping into it with a inadequate BR.

You need to bring at least $1500 to the game.

As far as your overall bankroll, I would say you need about $20000 overall if you really want to play it regularly.

How is a 10k BR to play the 9-18? I would think that would be enough considering I am not a loose cannon.

A little on the small side, but should be ok. In fact, that's probably a bigger roll than most of those players have.

What are your thoughts on the $200 NL game they spread there? I have beaten the game overall but don't see it as a good game to play everyday. I doubt you have played it but you might no some players that have?

The NL games are good pretty much at all the casinos, and there are more and more everyday thanks to ESPN and the Travel Channel. I was talking to the poker room guys in a casino in Vegas only like 4 years ago and asked them where are the NL tables? They said they would only run them when there are big tournaments in town, they are an action killer they said. Now, almost impossible to not find NL tables in casinos, the Bike knocked down walls to expand specifically for the NL games.

I can tell you this, and this is probably the best advice I can give you playing these tables live....wait. If you got time and and ask them when they are opening a new table, get in on that table when it open up. Much better game for you than sitting down with people who are super high stacked from playing for hours and can bully you around. They will put you all in every hand because they can...and you don't want to be there.

Hope that helps.

I couldn't agree more with that last reply. I frequent the NL500 games at both the borgata and the taj. There are always guys there with 1500+ dollars in front of them built up over a couple of hours. At this level, they tend to use their stacks very well to their advantage. It's possible to wait until you have a monster and try to make them pay, but they'll take too much from you in the meantime by consistantly pushing all in. It's much better to be one of those guys than to be fighting one. Waiting for a new game to start is really great advice.

I have a question for Dan!

I'm a fairly experienced player who is going to the Commerce Casino for the first time! At what levels do the games get less-donkish? Dustin has said the 40-80 is attrocious, but I don't believe him. How bad is the 20-40? 30-60? 40-80? or whatever middle-limits they have.

I've heard that L.A. is the poker mecca now, and i have get to see it!

thanks Dan! I'm a big fan of your posts.

Yes, it's certainly true that Dustin tends to overexaggerate how "good" a game is. I haven't been to Commerce in awhile, but here is what I remember there:

The 40-80 is a mixture of good and bad, depending upon who is there. It's not always an easy game, and sometimes resembles the Stars 30-60 games. At other times, it can be a good game, but there are usually at least a few solid and/or solid-tricky players there.

The 30-60 game is usually really good. For whatever reason, 30 players are almost always especially weak, and the game is easy to run over. Sadly, if you blow on the 30 game the wrong way, it will break, so don't plan on being there all night.

The yellow chip games (15 and 20) are usually pretty good, especially as of late. However, they move them into the crappy main room during tournament time, and I really hate playing in that crowded, aging mess. It's so much more pleasant to play in the top section. The good news is that these games usually have at least 1 or 2 donks, and few really good players.

Let me know when you are in LA, and perhaps I can finally meet the legendary Micon.

Micon..last time I was there I played the 30/60 and it was pretty soft. It was softer than the 20/40 here in Chicago/Indiana if you have ever played here in Dustins neck of the woods.
