I've recently come across a 20/40 game with a $8 rake. It gets down to $1 per person when under 8 people. (sigh) The lineup is pretty decent, but nothing extrodinary. I've ran pretty bad in this game and am wondering if it is worth the effort. There are no legal limit games within a few hours drive from here, so this game has convienence, good food, and the people are pretty interesting. Anyone think the $8 rake kills the profitablility? I'm guessing I would normally make 1 BB/hr while playing with the normal Vegas rake. I figure $8 rake takes about another $10 an hour out of whatever I'd make. I think it also makes me need to tighten up considerably with all the hands that would otherwise be marginal at best. Anyone have any opinions on this ?

The way I see it.. Usually $4 a hand x 30 hands an hour. (Althought it might be closer to 40 hands/hrAFAIK) means 120.. $8 means 240. So my share of the rake goes up about another 12 an hour. If it is 40 hands/hour then I'm probably looking at like an additional $16 an hour to overcome. Dunno.. Playing a game for ~$20 an hour with constant thousand dollar swings doesn't seem like a good idea, especially since I really don't have $ to throw around. However I miss playing poker... and its a pretty fun game.

thoughts ?

knowing that i was being charged a dollar a hand would send me into tiltsville. it'd probably cause me to play overly aggressive and make mistakes cause i have issues.

In what increments is it taken out? The Mirage for instance takes the fourth dollar when the pot is $240. 20/40 at Ceasers, IN takes the 5th dollar when the pot is $50. So if you raise and only the BB calls and check folds the flop, $5 is taken out in Indiana and either one or two in LV depending on which blind calls. If you are in a game where this is a common scenario (which wasn't the case in Indiana) the rake could be better or worse depending (most likely worse Im guessing).

With that said, Im not sure you can tell me a rake structure that makes $8 acceptable

They just sorta do it quickly, I'm not really sure. (I have no reason to think its not on the up and up.. A few grinders in the game keep an eye on things..)
It appears to be something like this. See flop, $4. See turn, $4. It is rarely 3 bet preflop etc, so I'm not sure if thats the rule or not. Basically I've never seen less than $4 taken out once the flop is seen. Yea, I don't think it is really "acceptable" either, but I have no other real options. People play on credit like crazy too. Dunno... I guess it wouldn't bother me so much, but I've been running bad as opposed to being mr golden like I was in Vegas. heh.

If the game is great, then it's worth it.

Otherwise it's not, especially if it's short or semi-short.

Take the 7-player scenario and 40 hands per hour.

Let's say that only 35 of those hands see flops.

You will win an average of 5 (35/7) raked hands per hour.

That means you will pay $40 in rake per hour, which is 1 big bet.

If your expected win rate is 1 big bet per hour, you just killed it in rake.

Also, there's the principle of the matter. They're gouging you, and I wouldn't play it for that reason alone.
